Speaking on International Holocaust Remembrance Day S&D vice-president Tanja Fajon said:

“In the age of post-truth politics and with the rise of the extreme right it is more important than ever that we remember the full horror of the holocaust. 75 years ago this month, the decision was taken to deliberately and systemically murder an entire race of people in Europe. In the three years following that decision, the Nazi regime and collaborators in Europe killed over six million Jews, two million Roma people and over 250,000 disabled people. This is something we must never forget.

“In recent weeks politicians on the far right have attempted to gain headlines by attacking holocaust remembrance. Even the genocide of eight million people has become just another communications tool. Responsible politicians on the left and right must fight back. We need to combat fake news and attempts to change the history of Europe. If we fail to do this, we risk not only forgetting the horrors of the 20th Century but also reliving them.”
