Education, poverty, health, democracy, human rights and gender equality - these are just some of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) we all committed to implement by 2030. But the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic, followed by the Russian aggression against Ukraine, drew public and political attention away from the goals and the absolute and urgent need to achieve them.

Millions of people, most of them women and girls, are suffering from famine in the global South, whilst many nations still face the dire costs of the Covid-19 pandemic. The ongoing crises demand even more focus and the EU must play a crucial role in fighting inequalities and poverty to help our partners create sustainable, resilient, equal and just societies.

This is the main message an S&D Delegation - led by S&D coordinator of the development committee, Udo Bullmann MEP - will deliver during a four-day mission to the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

From Monday 27 to Thursday 30 June, the S&D Delegation - including S&D MEP Evin Incir, the foreign affairs committee’s standing rapporteur for Palestine, and S&D MEP Karsten Lucke, member of the special committee on the Covid-19 pandemic - will have the chance to discuss and meet with the Special Adviser on Africa to the United Nations Secretary-General and Under-Secretary-General, Cristina Duart; the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid; and the University Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development, Columbia University, Jeffrey Sachs, among others.
