The city of Brussels today recognised the life of former UK Labour MP Jo Cox, naming a square in her honour. Jo worked in Brussels, both in the European Parliament as an assistant for former Labour MEP Glenys Kinnock and for Oxfam international.

Speaking at the inauguration of Jo Cox Square in the centre of Brussels, S&D Group leader Udo Bullmann said:

“Jo spent her life fighting to make the world a better place, both through progressive politics and through her humanitarian work. She fought for the idea that there is more that unites us than divides us and for the rights of oppressed people around the world. It is a fitting tribute by the City of Brussels to name a square in her honour, recognising the time that she spent here and the values of inclusion and tolerance that she stood for.

“Jo spent two years working in our Group and is remembered by colleagues for her passion, her energy, and her commitment to progressive values. We were privileged to have her with us and we are here today to honour her legacy.”

The inauguration of the square was announced by Brussels Mayor Philippe Close. The event was also attended by various figures from the UK Labour Party including leader Jeremy Corbyn.
