Quote of the week by S&D president Iratxe Garcia Perez on the UK leaving the European Union
“This was always going to be a difficult moment for many on both sides of the channel but it is made even harder as we have to say a sad but fond farewell to 10 outstanding MEPs who have worked tirelessly for citizens all across Europe, improving people’s lives in every corner of Europe. Not to mention all those who came before them, throughout the last 45 years of Labour MEPs.”
As we witness these historic moments, our warmest thoughts go to our Labour members and British colleagues who, through a decision that was out of their hands, are now forced to part ways with the EU.
It is not good bye, it’s au revoir!
Work in the European Parliament continues, as we approach the February plenary session in Strasbourg.
On Monday we look forward to hearing the European Commission’s proposal on the future relations of the European Union with the United Kingdom after Brexit. We made it clear that we want to safeguard in particular citizens’ rights.
From Monday, February 3rd to Wednesday, February 5th, three of our members will take part in a joint LIBE and DROI mission to Croatia and Bosnia. Isabel Santos, Dietmar Koster and Bettina Vollath will be on ground, assessing the situation of refugees and migrants trying to reach the European Union via Croatian borders.
Tuesday is the day our members in the Digital Europe Working Group will be hosting an exchange of views with Commissioner Thierry Breton, on the EU’s technological sovereignty and cybersecurity.
