Quote of the week on Greece decision by S&D president, Udo Bullmann

"Member states and the European Institutions must draw lessons from recent history and avoid repeating the same mistakes. The financial crisis proved that the path of austerity leads nowhere good, only to a vicious cycle of recession and more pain."

Upcoming activities

Another busy week in the European Parliament. On Monday, the Civil Liberties, Justice, and Home Affairs Committee will vote on triggering Article 7 procedures against the Hungarian government for serious threats of the EU's fundamental values. The Committee then hosts the second hearing on the Cambridge Analytica scandal, bringing representatives from Facebook to hear what is being done to ensure that European citizen's data is protected.

Stay tuned and follow us on Twitter where we will react as soon as the action takes place.

While preparing for the next Plenary session we plan to focus on several important issues - the decisions taken during the European Council summit, scheduled to take place on June 28 - 29, the upcoming Austrian Presidency of the European Council and the debate with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on the Future of Europe.

Our MEPs Soraya Post, Antonio Panzeri and Wajid Khan will be on a 5-day mission to Washington DC to meet with think tanks, NGOs, representatives of US Congress and former and current officials in the US administration.

The focus of their talks will be on human rights, including women reproductive rights and the rights of minorities and LGBT community, and the US withdrawal from different multilateral organisations and agreements. The visit is taking place just a few days after the Trump administration decided to withdraw the US from the UN Human Rights Council.

On Wednesday 27 June 2018, our Group president Udo Bullmann together with MEPs Jeppe Kofod and Josef Weidenholzer will join our conference on New social media at the service of a progressive agenda - the Avaaz example. The event will take place in the European Parliament in Brussels in room PHS P3C050 from 14:00 to 16:00.

Also, on Wednesday 27 June, our MEPs Tanja Fajon, Juan Fernando López Aguilar and Péter Niedermüller will discuss the 'Power and Perils of Propaganda' with policy makers, academics and stakeholders.

Together with the Global Progressive Forum and with the support of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Solidar and Solidar Tunisie, we are organising on 27th and 28th June the conference  'Addressing the main challenges of the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation: A progressive agenda'. This will take place in the European Parliament in Brussels from 15:00 to 18:00.

On 28 June, S&D IMCO coordinator Nicola Danti and IMCO Rapporteur Christel Schaldemose will discuss 'Online platforms' with a range of stakeholders during a conference at the European Parliament - Altiero Spinelli (ASP) building in Room A5E-2.

Finally, don’t forget to register for the Together Event in Paris: The Europe of tomorrow; it's left. Our Group president Udo Bullmann and MEPs will discuss in particular how our cities can drive the transition to an ever more sustainable and progressive society with mayors, Commissioner Pierre Moscovici, journalists, and academics. The event will be hosted by Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris & Sergei Stanishev, Member of the European Parliament, PES President.
