On the occasion of the signing of a new treaty between France and Germany today in Aachen, S&D group leader Udo Bullmann said:

“The Élysée Treaty has been at the very heart of our European project. It stands for the deep conviction that we are all stronger if we work together. We welcome that this spirit of cooperation between France and Germany shall now be revived and reinforced. However, we must not stop at symbolic acts. We need concrete joint initiatives – for example, in digital taxation, in a true Eurozone Budget with financial firepower and in the defence of fundamental European values against attacks from right-wing populists. We hope that both countries have now overcome the stagnation in their relationship and will give new impetus to the European initiatives that are so urgently needed.”
