On the eve of the 40th anniversary of the referendum by which Spaniards adopted their Constitution, the S&D Group in the European Parliament want to congratulate the Spanish people.

S&D president Udo Bullmann said:

“Today we want to warmly congratulate Spain for its 40 years of democracy and rule of law guaranteed by its Constitution. This fundamental law ensures political liberty, fundamental freedoms, political pluralism and a frame for living-together, the “convivencia”, which took Spain to the heart of Europe and made it into a constructive and loyal partner.

“At a time when new extremist and anti-European parties threaten the conquered freedoms and the shared values, we should more than ever claim the principles of the Constitution.”

The president of the Spanish delegation in the S&D Group, Iratxe García Pérez, added:

“Forty years ago the Spanish people, in freedom, chose to build a social and democratic State, based on the rule of law, in line with the European democracies around us. The Constitution established a regime of freedoms, rights and duties, and it started a political and administrative process of decentralisation by recognising the Autonomous Communities.

“Now that some attempt to cut back on those liberties and undermine the respect for pluralism in our societies, let’s remember that the values in the Constitution are the values of Europe: individual freedoms, equality, social justice and respect for diversity.”
