The country's failure to conduct free and fair elections or to fulfil international standards for democracy and the rule of law, means the European Parliament does not have official relations with the Parliament of Belarus which it does not consider to be elected in free and fair elections according to international standards. The delegation maintains active and close dialogue with representatives of the country's democratic opposition, independent NGOs and civil society.
There are regular meetings held in Brussels and Strasbourg on the development of EU policy towards Belarus and assessing the political and economic situation, as well as the state of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
