Inequalities within and between countries are constantly rising. This is further exacerbated by multiple overlaying crises - such as the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change and food insecurity - leading to extreme poverty, hunger and fragmented societies.

For the S&D Group, reducing inequalities and fighting poverty is a top priority and a prerequisite for global sustainable development. We are convinced that achieving Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries (SDG 10) would have a profound impact on the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda. Therefore, we are pleased to organise this event at a time when Heads of State and Government have reaffirmed their commitment to the goals at the SDG Summit in New York.

In the high-level panel (10:30-11:30) with S&D MEP Udo Bullmann and Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, we will discuss new ways forward to tackle inequalities and present DG INTPA’s recently launched inequality marker. We are honoured that Dr. Donald Kaberuka, Economist and former President of African Development Bank and Tanya Cox, Director of CONCORD will enrich the debate with their perspectives.

The in-depth workshop (11:30-12:30) will give you the opportunity to learn more about the inequality marker.  Mathilde Cournut, Policy and Project Officer for Inequalities at DG INTPAChristian Morabito, Researcher and Inequality Expert and Chiara Putaturo, EU Inequality and Tax Policy Advisor at Oxfam EU office will answer your questions about its practical implications.
