Today, member states found agreement on their position on the crisis regulation that had blocked progress on negotiations between the Parliament and the Council on the Migration and Asylum Pact. With this development, negotiations on all aspects of EU asylum reform can take place, including solidarity and the fair sharing of responsibility between EU member states.

Responding to the agreement in the Council, Gaby Bischoff, S&D vice-president for migration, said:

“With the adoption of the Council mandate on the crisis regulation, member states have finally taken a position on all legislative proposals on the table. Now the conditions are met to conclude negotiations of the entire package with the European Parliament before the European elections next year. In addition, we can resume the political trilogues on the screening and Eurodac regulations. There can be no Pact without a fair balance between solidarity and responsibility and it is time for everyone to get around the negotiating table to find reliable and progressive solutions.”
