Following the third round of voting for a new president, the Greek government announced a general election which will be held on 25 January 2015.

The president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, stated:

“The democratic future of Greece is now back in the hands of the Greek people with elections to be held on 25 January 2015.

“We call for unity and responsibility from all progressive and pro-European forces in order to ensure that Greece can proceed with a strong government capable of managing the economic crises and providing its people with greater social justice. This would be the best answer to the Troika and to all Eurosceptic forces, not just in Greece but throughout Europe.

“It is abundantly clear that the dictatorial path laid out by the Troika has not and will not lead anywhere. On the contrary, it has caused only more exasperation for people who have already been badly affected by five years of austerity measures.”
