The single charger for multiple electronic devices will finally become a reality in the EU as a result of the work by the S&D Group and its vice-president Alex Agius Saliba. Thanks to his efforts and the support of the Socialists and Democrats, consumers will no longer have to buy a new charger every time they buy a new mobile phone, camera, laptop, or any other chargeable device.
S&D vice-president Alex Agius Saliba was the chief EP negotiator on the negotiations with the European Commission and the member states in the Council of the EU.
Alex Agius Saliba, S&D vice-president and EP negotiator on the issue, said:
“Today, we mark the end of a battle our group has been fighting for for over 10 years in the interests of our citizens and the environment.
“Our group is aware that technology moves forward at a remarkable speed. The European Commission’s decision to regularly revise and update this long list of chargeable devices with new products works in the interests of both our citizens and the research and development sector. Regular revision makes sure that the EU rules that work for the people do not block the development of new technologies in Europe.
“In my work, I am always guided by the principle to leave as large a choice as possible to consumers. According to the new rules, consumers will be given this choice - either to buy a new charger if they want to or continue to use their existing USB Type-C charger. However, they will not be obliged either way, the decision is theirs. A single charger for multiple electronic devices is both good for our pocket and for the planet, and I am happy our group has made it possible.”

By autumn 2024, USB Type-C will become the common charging port for smartphones; e-readers; earbuds; keyboards; computer mice; portable navigation devices; tablets; digital cameras; headphones and headsets; handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers.
As for laptops, including notebooks, portables, hybrids and netbooks, the rule for the common charger USB Type-C will be applied from the beginning of 2026.
