Following an attack in Strasbourg that claimed the lives of innocent people, S&D Group president Udo Bullmann said:

"The whole of our Group and the European Parliament are in shock at the horrific attack that took place at the Christmas market in Strasbourg last night. This is an attack on people relaxing and enjoying times with their families. All our thoughts are with those who lost their lives and those who were injured. We thank the police and emergency services who put their lives in danger to help those in need and the inhabitants of this city that we call home for one week every month.

"Europe has to stand united against any form of violence or terror. Terrorists strike at our fundamental freedoms and our democratic values. We must not fall in the trap to restrict them further but must defend an open and robust democratic society. This is what my Group seeks to achieve in our parliamentary work. No violence or attack will ever undermine our passion for freedom and democracy.”
