This Saturday, the leader of the S&D Group, Udo Bullmann, visits the congress of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) in Batalha (Portugal). During his visit he will meet with Prime Minister António Costa, Carlos Zorrinho, the leader of the Portuguese S&D Delegation, as well as other members of the S&D family and journalists and will deliver a speech.

Ahead of his visit, Udo Bullmann said:

“One year ahead of the European elections, as we join our forces to build a broad progressive camp across Europe, I am absolutely delighted to go to Portugal to visit our comrades of the Socialist Party. My aim is not only to liaise with them, but mostly to listen and to learn from them. The work of our Portuguese sister party is an example and an inspiration to us. The Socialist government, led by António Costa and supported in the parliament by a left-wing coalition, turned the page of austerity, reconstituted family incomes and social rights that had been destroyed by the previous right-wing government. This has been achieved all the while respecting fiscal rules and maintaining a pro-European line. The Portuguese experience proves that a progressive agenda is possible and, above all, very successful!

Carlos Zorrinho, head of the Portuguese S&D Delegation, said:

“The path that the Portuguese Socialist Party defined for its government, while bringing back hope and implementing a progressive agenda for Portugal, has always counted together with the unconditional support by the S&D Group in the European Parliament. The implementation of this agenda allowed us to prove that it is possible to be pro-European, respect the treaties and implement policies that aim at accomplishing the left wing plural values, and free the European project from the ruling neo-liberal idea that ‘there is no alternative’. The participation of Udo Bullmann in the Congress of the Portuguese Socialist Party is an opportunity to reaffirm the partnership between the Portuguese socialists and the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament in the fight for a progressive European agenda for the future.

Udo Bullmann faz a primeira visita oficial a Portugal enquanto líder do Grupo S&D
