Contract agent - Function Group IV - Unit press and social media/audio-visual press officer - Maternity cover - 6 months contract

The S&D Group is looking for a Press Officer to cover the following duties under the supervision of the Head of Unit and Head of Department: 

  • Drafting press releases, lines-to-take, opinion-pieces, speeches, speaking points and video scripts;
  • Conceiving, planning and implementing communication plans and strategies;
  • Liaising with the accredited press corps in Brussels and EU member states, and pitching stories;
  • Ensuring that information is appropriately targeted on relevant media;
  • Drafting and placing articles for the S&D Group including Leadership in national and European media;
  • Liaising with policy advisors, social media team, audio-visual team, web and publications team and others on the communication in relevant policy areas;
  • Organising and moderating press events, press briefings and interviews;
  • Advising on content to be published on the website and campaigns;
  • Writing in English as well as, when applicable, in other languages, press releases and communications for the Group;
  • Contributing to the regular maintenance and updating of the media database and distribution lists, as well as to the monitoring of the media impact and coverage of the Group; 
  • Responsible for press and communications, specifically in the following policy areas – IMCO, JURI.

Eligibility

  • Be a national of a Member State of the European Union;
  • Enjoy their full rights as citizens;
  • Have fulfilled any obligations imposed by national laws concerning military service;
  • Produce the appropriate character references as to their suitability for the  performance of their duties;
  • A level of education which corresponds to completed university studies of at least three years attested by a diploma; university degree in journalism or communication;
  • At least one year of professional experience as a press officer, journalist, media coordinator relating to the nature of duties laid out.

Knowledge & Skills required

  • Communication professional with very good communication skills;
  • Very good conceptual and writing abilities;
  • Very good ability to analyse and summarise a subject;
  • Excellent knowledge of standard computer applications as well as social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Telegram, as well as mailing and data base systems such as Mailchimp and media monitoring tools;
  • Experience with media campaigns and newsletters is a plus;
  • Capacity for team work in a multinational and multicultural environment;
  • Very good knowledge of the European Union legal, institutional and political systems.

Languages

  • For functional reasons, excellent knowledge of English (C1 minimum level);
  • A satisfactory knowledge of one the working languages of the S&D Group: French, Spanish or German (minimum B2 level) is an added value;
  • Knowledge of other official languages of the European Union will be taken into consideration.

The S&D Group insists, in particular, on the fact that this position requires availability and flexibility, a methodical approach, discretion, a capacity for rapid adaptation to variable workloads. Candidates must be able to demonstrate initiative, both independently and as a team, and adapt to a multicultural environment. 

Frequent travel outside Belgium may be required, especially to Strasbourg during the parliamentary sessions.

Duration of the contract: 6 months (maternity cover) starting, from 1/09/25.
