Conclusions of the European Council meeting of 20 March 2025

Debate on: Tuesday, 1 April

GARCÍA PÉREZ Iratxe - President of the S&D Group

We welcome the commitment from EU leaders on support to Ukraine and on advancing the defence union. We need a broader concept of defence that includes industry, but also the defence of our social model. New challenges require more funding. Common debt, based on the model of Next Generation EU and own resources, is the path to follow. We are calling for a competitive, resilient and social Europe, which protects and provides security for all its citizens, adding rights, not cutting them.

Presentation of the New European Internal Security Strategy

Debate on: Tuesday, 1 April

MENDES Ana Catarina - Vice-president of the S&D Group for strong democracy and rule of law

We want safe societies for citizens. EU policy has been essential in achieving that, especially for the fight against organised crime. We will carefully assess the Internal Security Strategy presented next week to ensure it meets our expectations. It must address key issues such as attacks on our democracy and the rise of hate and violent extremism in society.

Social Europe

Debate on: Wednesday, 2 April

BISCHOFF Gabriele - Vice-president of the S&D Group for social Europe

In times of monumental geopolitical shifts that pose unprecedented threats to Europe’s security and democracy, we need Europe more than ever – and that means a more social Europe than ever. Strengthening our security must not come at the expense of our unique social model: quality jobs, workers’ rights, social protection and equality. Europeans will only be truly safe – protected from threats both external and internal – if our continent continues to be built on solidarity, equality and prosperity.

Savings and Investments Union

Debate on: Monday, 31 March

FERNÁNDEZ Jonás - S&D spokesperson in European Parliament's committee on economic and monetary affairs

Faced with Trump’s destructive economic and geopolitical agenda, Europe must strengthen its capital markets by putting citizens at the centre and giving companies better financing opportunities. In this context, the S&Ds welcome the new strategy for a Savings and Investments Union. To secure the €800bn in annual investments needed, we must protect small investors by ensuring access to better EU-wide products to help channel savings on the financial markets. S&Ds also support steps for more harmonised and centralised EU supervision.

Recent legislative changes in Hungary and their impact on fundamental rights

Debate on: Wednesday, 2 April

DOBREV Klára - Head of the Hungarian S&D delegation

All pro-EU parties in the European Parliament must send a clear message: we stand with the LGBTIQ community, and Pride in Hungary and across Europe. The S&D Group is clear on this. We trust other groups will find the courage to come to the debate with the same clarity. Ambiguity on Orbán’s agenda cannot be acceptable.

Crackdown on democracy in Türkiye and the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu

Debate on: Tuesday, 1 April

SÁNCHEZ AMOR Nacho - S&D spokesperson in the European Parliament’s committee on foreign affairs

We have requested a plenary debate on the crackdown on democracy in Türkiye, following the arrest and removal of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a clear political move to get rid of a contender for the future presidential elections. We express our solidarity with all those across the country peacefully demanding the respect of democratic principles, and we call on Turkish authorities to revert this dangerous drift towards a fully authoritarian model that will keep the doors to the EU shut for good.
