On Labour Day, S&Ds march with workers: defending a social Europe is not optional

On Labour Day, we celebrate the hard-won rights of workers around the world. But this is also a time to remember that these rights must never be taken for granted. The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament will march alongside workers tomorrow. May 1st is the right time to join the cause and stand up for a social Europe.

Iratxe García Pérez, S&D Group leader, said:

"A social Europe is not optional – it is the heart and soul of the European project. There can be no trade-off between social progress and security or competitiveness. Social justice goes hand in hand with economic strength and shared prosperity.

"This Labour Day, we renew our pledge to defend a social Europe and protect workers' rights. These rights – won through decades of struggle – are now under growing threat from an increasingly aggressive far right. We must remain vigilant and continue fighting to safeguard them.

"We demand dignity at work for all. Every worker in every sector deserves fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect – guaranteed by strong labour laws and empowered trade unions.

"Social security is not a privilege – it is a universal right. Healthcare, education, and public services must be accessible to all, funded by a fair and progressive tax system. We cannot – and we will not – negotiate on democracy, equality, and sustainability. They are sacred."

Gaby Bischoff, S&D vice-president for Social Europe, added:

"Labour Day is a time to honour historic achievements – fair pay, safe working conditions, and strong social protections. These are the pillars of our unique European social model, and the foundation for Europe’s future.

"Strong and independent trade unions are essential for securing fair working conditions, defending democracy at work, and ensuring that workers' voices are heard and respected. Labour Day is the right day to join a union and to stand up for the Europe we believe in.

"Looking ahead, as we shape the ecological and digital transformations, we must put workers' rights, decent work and social dialogue at the core of Europe's agenda. A just transition must deliver real opportunities and security for all, because only a fair and social Europe is a strong Europe."
