Romanian citizens are heading to a key presidential election on 18 May. Ahead of this pivotal moment for Romania and for Europe, the Party of European Socialists (PES) and the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D Group) reaffirm their unwavering stance against far-right nationalism, populism, and extremism, and are convinced that the Romanian member party, PSD, its members, and supporters will show their active commitment to the pro-European alternative.
They also pledge never to cooperate, normalise, or form coalitions with the far-right, regardless of the upcoming election results. The ideology, programme, and policies of the far-right are fundamentally opposed to our values, echoing some of the darkest chapters of our history. The progressive family will always champion pro-European political forces to confront those who seek to dismantle our democratic achievements and the very essence of the European project.
S&D President Iratxe García said:
"Aligning with the far-right is not an option for our political family. Our disapproval of the far-right is not a fad. They aim to destroy all the achievements and progress we have built in recent years, with the shortsighted excuse of protection against external threats based on disinformation, political interference, and hate.
"We have just celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration – the founding text of the European Union – which was conceived under the idea of integration and common interest. Our project speaks about growth, employment, competitiveness, social justice, equality, rule of law, freedom, and democracy, and we are ready to work and cooperate only with those who share these values.
"We call upon all pro-European and democratic forces across the EU to join forces not only to preserve the rights of our citizens, but also to move forward and consolidate growth and prosperity in this challenging geopolitical situation."
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
"In recent days, we marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe and we must honour the historical memory of those who fought for freedom, peace, and democracy. We must continue to build upon the European vision that we cherish, which strives for a more inclusive society that respects its citizens and promotes equality, democracy, and social justice.
"That is because democracy is a system where power belongs to the people. It is the antithesis of autocracy, fostering equality and shared governance. Democracy, by its nature, transcends discrimination and stigma, ensuring peace and harmony for all.
"As Romanians head to the polls, they should remember that our Union is facing grave threats from radical right-wing extremism. The time to defend our democratic values is now, and our member party PSD and its supporters have always been among the defenders of democracy and European values."
