“The next MFF must promote a stronger social Europe by strengthening the European Pillar of Social Rights, modernising and decentralising cohesion policy aiming at a more sustainable, competitive and fair economy and society. At the same time, it must tackle challenges such as the green transition, as well as security, defence and preparedness, which are essential pillars for a healthy and prosperous society. In addition, an ambitious budget must explore new and modernised sources of revenue, including joint borrowing, to ensure that the Union is sufficiently equipped to respond to its citizens’ needs.”

Celebrating freedom and democracy
Today, on April 25th, we honour a powerful shared legacy of liberation in both Italy and Portugal – two nations that turned the tide of history by rising against fascism and authoritarianism. In Italy, it's Festa della Liberazione, marking the end of Nazi occupation and the fall of Mussolini’s regime in 1945. In Portugal, it’s the Dia da Liberdade, celebrating the peaceful Carnation Revolution of 1974 that overthrew decades of dictatorship. These anniversaries remind us of the enduring power of collective courage, the resilience of democratic ideals, and the ongoing fight for freedom, justice, and dignity for all. We don’t just remember. We recommit!
Labour Day
This Labour Day, join us in honouring the tireless efforts of workers past and present who have built the foundation of our society. S&D Group president, Iratxe García, will participate in the 1st of May celebration at Mont des Arts, Brussels.
From fighting for fair wages and safe working conditions to demanding justice and equity on the job, the labour movement has always been at the heart of progress. As we celebrate this day, let’s also recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight for workers’ rights, advocating for a living wage, and standing in solidarity with those on the frontlines of economic and social change. A fairer, more just world is possible – and it starts with empowering the people who keep it running every day.
Time to celebrate!
21 years ago, on 1 May, the European Union expanded its borders, welcoming new member states into its fold, in its biggest enlargement thus far. Since then, more countries have joined and become integral parts of the EU family, enriching its cultural tapestry, bolstering its economy, and advancing its shared values of democracy, human rights and solidarity.
Ahead of the 2004-2013 EU enlargements, the S&D Group has played a key role in preparing political partners from aspiring countries through the Willy Brandt Programme, named after the visionary leader who strove to reconcile Eastern and Western Europe. As we enter the 2024-2029 parliamentary term, we have relaunched this initiative with renewed commitment. Over the next four years, the programme will strongly support EU enlargement and enhance the role of progressive forces and civil society in EU candidate countries.

If you:
- are aged at least 18 and maximum 35 on the traineeship start date;
- are a national of a member state of the European Union unless the provisions of Article 26 apply;
- share the values of the Group and have a university degree (at least a BA or equivalent degree);
- have a thorough knowledge of English or French (good knowledge of another of the official languages of the European Union is desirable)
