“Aligning with the far right is not an option for our political family. Our disapproval of the far right is not a fad. They aim to destroy all the achievements and progress we have made in recent years, with the shortsighted excuse of protection against external threats based on disinformation, political interference and hate. We call upon all pro-European and democratic forces across the EU to join forces not only to preserve the rights of our citizens, but also to move forward and consolidate growth and prosperity in this challenging geopolitical situation.”

On the agenda: the EU’s response to the Israeli government’s plan to seize the Gaza strip and ensuring humanitarian support and liberation of hostages, the Single Market Strategy, Russian energy phase-out and EU energy sovereignty, the attractiveness of the EU for scientists and improving mental health at work.

It’s Pride month!
Pride Month 2025 arrives at a critical time for LGBTIQ+ communities across Europe. As far-right rhetoric and discriminatory policies gain ground in parts of the continent, Pride remains a vital force of visibility, solidarity and resistance. From major cities to smaller towns, this year’s celebrations serve not only as joyful affirmations of queer identity, but also as powerful reminders that equality, dignity and freedom are not negotiable. European Pride stands united across borders, languages and histories, insisting on a future where all people can live openly, safely, and without fear.
On Tuesday, 20 May, S&D President Iraxte García and S&D EUDS Coordinator Christel Schaldemose will take part in an exchange with civil society, organised with the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS). The roundtable on the European Democracy Shield will reflect on the latest developments and underscore the need for actionable solutions to protect democracy. A key focus is ensuring the regulatory framework is effective, with particular attention to demonetising disinformation. More information can be found here.
