Leading S&D MEPs have welcomed the fact that the referendum to change the definition of marriage in the Romanian constitution failed to gain the necessary support to pass. The referendum was on changing the definition from the neutral ‘spouses’ to one between a man and woman only.
At least 30% of voters needed to take part in the ballot for the result to be valid, according to exit polls only about 19.5% of Romanians voted.
S&D Group president Udo Bullmann said:
“This result shows that the vast majority of the Romanian population have no interest in seeing the country discriminate against same-sex couples. The proposed change to the constitution would have been a clear backwards step for LGBTI rights and we are glad that this intolerant idea of family did not receive the support of Romanian citizens. What should matter in a marriage is who you love, not what gender they are.
“Our Group has always been at the forefront of the fight for LGBTI rights and we will speak out whenever we see these under threat. We hope the Romanian government will listen to voters and focus on the issues they care most about. We also encourage the government to come forward with the draft for civil partnership that is in preparation.
“We have long argued that all EU member states need to recognise civil partnerships and same-sex marriages, so citizens have their status and rights protected when they move to another EU country. This is a clear bar to free movement of people that the EU has a duty to tackle.”

Liderii Grupului S&D au primit cu bucurie vestea că referendumul pentru schimbarea definiției căsătoriei in Constituția României nu a obținut sprijinul necesar pentru a fi validat. Referendumul viza schimbarea definiției din conceptul neutru de "soți" in uniunea dintre "un bărbat și o femeie".
Un minim de 30% din populația cu drept de vot era necesar pentru validarea rezultatului referendumului, iar prezența la urne, conform cifrelor oficiale, a fost de aproximativ 19.5%.
Președintele Grupului S&D, Udo Bullmann, a declarat:
"Acest rezultat arată că majoritatea românilor nu au niciun interes in a-și vedea țara discriminând cuplurile de același sex. Schimbarea propusă a fi adusă Constituției ar fi fost un clar pas înapoi pentru drepturile persoanelor LGBTI și ne bucurăm că această idee intolerantă asupra conceptului de familie nu a primit susținerea cetățenilor României. Ceea ce ar trebui sa conteze într-o familie este pe cine iubești, nu sexul persoanei de lângă tine.
Grupul nostru a fost întotdeauna vârful de lance al luptei pentru drepturile LGBTI și vom susține acest lucru oriunde le vom vedea amenințate. Sperăm că Guvernul României va asculta alegătorii și se va concentra pe problemele care contează pentru aceștia. De asemenea, încurajăm Guvernul să înainteze lucrul pentru legislația parteneriatului civil, care este încă în pregătire.
Am susținut de mult timp faptul că toate statele membre UE trebuie sa recunoască parteneriatele civile și căsătoriile persoanelor de același sex, astfel încât cetățenii să aibă statutul și drepturile protejate atunci când intră într-un alt stat membru UE. Acesta este un impediment clar in calea dreptului la libera circulație al cetățenilor, lucru pe care UE are datoria de a-l rezolva.”
