We have repeatedly denounced the current Polish and Hungarian governments for their deplorable anti-democratic behaviour. At the same time, we launched the European Parliament’s condemnation of their actions. The S&D Group were the overwhelming force in the vote to trigger a procedure against Hungary, which could see sanctions and voting rights being suspended in response to violations against fundamental EU rights.

Our Group has played an instrumental role in gathering a huge majority in Parliament against neo-fascist violence in Europe, denouncing the rise of extreme-right violence and condemning the normalisation of these ideologies and other forms of intolerance.

The future of the Union is important to us and we led the way in setting out a clear future for the EU’s institutions. We have also worked to increase transparency and improve democratic legitimacy.
