“We, the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, take a zero tolerance stance on corruption and corruptive political interference.
“Since the Qatargate scandal broke in December 2022, we have introduced and proposed additional measures to enhance transparency and root out corruption in the European Institutions. These measures are not only internal; our 15-point plan to prevent and combat corruption and political interference was presented to the Conference of Presidents in January 2023.
“In light of today’s developments on the request to waive the immunity of two members, Alessandra Moretti and Elisabetta Gualmini, both MEPs have demanded the suspension of their S&D Group membership and their request, according to S&D internal rules, has been approved by the S&D Bureau.
“We, the S&D Group in the European Parliament:
- reaffirm our respect for the ongoing judicial proceedings and for this reason we do not comment on ongoing judicial proceedings;
- reiterate our full collaboration with judicial and all investigating authorities;
- will follow the procedure in accordance with the internal rules of the group and those of the European Parliament.”
