Labour MEPs voted today for an EU ban on the cloning of farm animals.
MEPs backed a ban on the use of cloning in animal production for farm purposes of all animal species, and a ban on food products derived from animal clones or their descendants.
However, cloning for research, medical or conservation purposes will continue.
Paul Brannen MEP, Labour's European spokesperson on agriculture, said:
"There are strong concerns over the welfare and conditions of cloned animals, and that is why we have voted for the EU ban on animal cloning.
"Labour MEPs believe animal welfare, food standards and biodiversity in our farming system will be protected, and we will continue to work for this."
